Artwork Preparation

Does PPD accept hand drawn artwork?

Ideally artwork should be supplied in digital form as this will result in a high quality etched sheet, we can where absolutely necessary use hand drawn artwork, please provide the drawing in black and white scaled as large as possible on A4 paper, unfortunately we cannot guarantee the quality of the final etched parts when artwork is generated by hand.

What file format does PPD accept?

We use the following software to edit our customers drawings: Corel, AutoCAD and Adobe Illustrator, if you have used one of these packages then please send in the native format, where an alternative package has been used please send in one of the following formats:

eps / dwg / dxf / dgn / ai / cdr

We also recommend that you send a pdf of the image that we can use as a reference to check for translation errors, unfortunately we cannot accept responsililty in instances where a pdf is not provided.

What is the largest file size that PPD can accept?

We do not have a maximum but please send your file with a dropbox link or send a zipped file.

Does PPD offer a drawing service?

We can create a vector drawing from your dimensioned sketches, please contact us for details.

How long will PPD store my tools?

Unless we have prior agreement we will store a digital copy of your original file in addition to the phototool for 5 years.

Can I send my own phototools to PPD?

We do accept phototools but please contact us to discuss the specific tools, unfortunately we cannot accept responsibility for the quality of the final etch from supplied phototools.

Please also ensure that you have a digital copy of the artwork as a backup as PPD do not accept responsibility for replacing damaged/lost phototools.

What colours/layouts should I use?

As a general rule you should create your drawing in black and white, where black is metal, keep in mind that we operate our software using a white screen.

Surface etch detail should be drawn on a separate layer, front detail drawn in red and back detail shown in blue.

I have artwork that was originally prepared for laser cutting artwork, can I use it for photoetched artwork?

No, laser cut artwork  (Outlines) is not a suitable format for the etching process, take a look at our ‘Artwork Guide’ for full information on the preparation of artwork.

Process Questions

What is the thickest metal PPD can etch/laser cut?

The thickest we would normally advise for a full etch would be around 1mm, this is due to the 'undercut' that results from the etching process that becomes more apparent the thicker the metal, we do however offer a 'combination' of our etching process and laser process, with this option we can surface etch the fine detail and use our laser to cut through the profile, this is available for thicknesses up to 3mm.

For our laser only process we can cut thicknesses up to 6mm.

Take a look at our ‘Stock Metals Info’ pdf file for the full listing of the thicknesses we stock.

What is the most economical sheet size?

We don’t have a standard sheet size, but where possible one dimension should be 285mm (300mm including the frame), the other dimension can be set to suit the parts that are to etched - since the setup cost is calculated on the area of phototool created it is therefore more cost effective to create a smaller tool and run multiple copies. (minimum tool size for repeats is 285mm x 150mm, ideally with a maximum of about 10 repeats)

What is the largest sheet size I can order?

The maximum sheet size depends on which metal type and thickness is selected, please refer to our ‘Stock Metal Info’ pdf file for all of the information.

Can PPD etch onto a 3D shape?

At the moment we do not etch onto 3D shapes, only flat 2D sheets.

Can PPD etch silver or gold?

We do etch and laser cut silver, please contact us for up to date information, at the moment we do not offer a gold etch service.

Can I surface etch (halfetch) on both sides of the metal at the same position?

Yes this is possible, processing time is a little longer than on a standard etch, please contact us for specific costs for this process.

I’d like to surface etch to 2 different depths, is that possible?

Technically, yes we can etch to 2 different depths, the practicality of this process will depend on whether the artwork is suitable, please contact us for further information and costing for this process.
